Imece Inisiyatifi - Solar Age
2019-10-15
We are a turkish non-profit called Imece Inisiyatifi working since 2015 in the unofficial camps of the Izmir region and with refugees who tried to cross the Aegean Sea. This year, we developped the Solar Age project. We designed a small portable tool powered by solar energy. Adapted to both life in the camps and long journeys, the Solar Age provides light and charges phones. It's aims are: 1. Provide light in humanitarian crisis where electricity access is often a struggle. 2. Saving lives. People will regularly squat for weeks waiting to cross. Without any way to charge their phones, they can't send their location to rescue boats, often with devastating consequences. 3. Provide a good income for the people creating the Solar Age. In november 2018, Imece Village will become an education center for refugee women to become solar engineers, in cooperation with Barefoot College. With electricity skills, the women of our program will be able to find work anywhere in the world, and to rebuild electrical systems torn apart by war. The refugee women will learn, produce and profit from the Solar Age project.
